Ashburnham Court, Bedford

Overview

Ashburnham Court is a prominent residential development located on Ashburnham Road in Bedford, directly opposite Bedford Railway Station. Originally built in 1954, the development comprises three interconnected blocks ranging from six to eight storeys in height, providing 55 one and two bedroom apartments across a mix of social rent and leasehold tenures.

As the first of three regeneration schemes delivered by United Living under Project Vista for BPHA, the refurbishment of Ashburnham Court formed part of a wider investment strategy focused on improving thermal efficiency, building safety, security and resident wellbeing. The extensive works included both internal and external refurbishment, transforming the appearance and performance of the existing buildings while ensuring they remain fit for the future.

SBS Cladding supplied Vitradual aluminium cladding panels by Valcan to help transform the external appearance of the building while supporting key project objectives around safety, sustainability and long-term performance.

Concept to completion

The multi-million pound refurbishment programme was designed to revitalise Ashburnham Court while minimising disruption to residents occupying the building throughout the works. Working alongside main contractor United Living and specialist subcontractor FCS Fabrications Ltd, the project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of three linked residential blocks.

The scope of works included the installation of new windows, roofing systems, fire safety improvements, upgraded heating infrastructure and extensive landscaping works. The external envelope was significantly enhanced through the introduction of a range of insulated façade systems, including external wall insulation, terracotta, aluminium and brick slip cladding solutions.

As part of the upgraded façade solution, Vitradual was selected for its proven performance, durability and design flexibility. Manufactured from solid aluminium, Vitradual provides a robust and non-combustible cladding solution, making it particularly suitable for high-rise residential applications where fire safety is a critical consideration. Its inherent strength and resistance to weathering ensure long-term façade performance, helping to reduce maintenance requirements and extend the lifecycle of the building envelope.

Alongside its safety credentials, Vitradual contributed to the project's sustainability objectives. The lightweight nature of the panels allows for efficient installation, while aluminium's recyclability supports a more environmentally responsible approach to construction.

From a design perspective, the cladding enabled the creation of a contemporary and visually striking façade that significantly refreshed the outdated appearance of Ashburnham Court. The bold colour and modern finish provide a strong architectural statement, helping to revitalise a building that has been part of Bedford for more than 70 years.

Since completion, Ashburnham Court has benefited from a significant uplift in appearance and energy efficiency. The refurbishment has helped create a safer, more comfortable and more sustainable living environment for residents, while extending the lifespan of this well-established Bedford landmark.
