Salvation Army, Chelmsford
Overview
The Salvation Army Citadel in Chelmsford is a distinctive 900sqm building that houses a worship hall and community facilities, supporting a range of outreach activities including clubs for over-60s and young people. Originally completed in 2009 and designed by Hudson Architects, the centre’s external courtyard recently underwent a recladding project to refresh its appearance.
The existing cladding was replaced with bright green Rockpanel mineral fibre cladding boards, creating a bold and contemporary finish. SBS Cladding supplied and fabricated the bespoke panels for the project, which were installed by local company, J42 Ltd. As a goodwill gesture, surplus panels were also used to reclad a shed within the courtyard, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls.
Concept to completion
Rockpanel mineral fibre cladding delivers a striking, modern aesthetic to the courtyard, with its vibrant green colour providing a strong contrast to the red brickwork of the surrounding buildings. The reclad shed now visually integrates into the courtyard, becoming part of the overall wall design rather than standing out as a separate structure.
In addition to its visual impact, Rockpanel cladding offered the project an A2 fire rating, high durability, and low maintenance requirements. These qualities ensure the cladding will perform reliably for many years, whilst adding a bright and welcoming atmosphere within the enclosed courtyard space.
