Harbour Quay, Swansea
Overview
Harbour Quay is a residential development of 69 apartments in Swansea that has recently undergone a recladding programme to replace the original combustible cladding. Developed by Coastal Housing Group and designed by Holder Mathias Architects, with support from the Welsh Assembly Government, the waterfront scheme overlooks the Prince of Wales Dock and sits just a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
Rockpanel mineral fibre cladding was utilised on this reclad project, due to its close visual match to the original facade, alongside its A2 fire rating. SBS Cladding worked in collaboration with sub-contractors M A Witcombe Ltd to supply the mineral fibre cladding and fabricate the panels to the desired sizes.
Concept to completion
Originally built in 2012, Harbour Quay was praised for its eco-conscious design, winning a Green Apple Award for sustainability. Following the Grenfell tragedy, Coastal Housing Group decided to remove the timber cladding, replacing it with a non-combustible, A2-rated alternative, without compromising the development’s original aesthetic.
Rockpanel was selected in the Woods finish, Alder, delivering a natural timber-effect appearance whilst offering the durability, low maintenance and fire resilience of stone. Its lightweight composition and quick installation also proved critical on a live site, allowing residents to remain in their homes throughout the recladding works.
Now complete, Harbour Quay benefits from a refreshed, contemporary facade. The Rockpanel cladding has been installed in a distinctive arrangement of vertical and horizontal panels, enhancing visual interest whilst delivering long-term performance and safety.
