Thorn Close, Wednesbury
Overview
A residential development at Thorn Close in Wednesbury has recently undergone refurbishment to improve the quality, performance and appearance of the housing. Designed by Urban Design and Building Services, the project focused on upgrading the external fabric of the buildings to improve energy efficiency, durability and long-term performance, whilst delivering a modern and cohesive architectural identity.
SBS Cladding worked with cladding installers Kynaston Contract Services to supply Hardie® Panel fibre cement cladding and Corium brick cladding to the scheme. The project, managed by SWG Construction, helped to address local housing demand whilst significantly improving the appearance of the buildings.
Concept
The refurbishment included transforming the 28 existing apartments, whilst also building four new ones. With a full building reclad a central part of the project, Hardie® Panel fibre cement cladding was specified as the primary cladding system, providing a robust, low-maintenance facade well suited to council housing applications. When combined with new external wall insulation, the system contributes to improved thermal performance, supporting lower energy consumption and reduced fuel bills for residents.
To complement the contemporary appearance of the fibre cement panels, Corium brick cladding was incorporated to introduce texture and to reference the surrounding built environment. The combination of materials creates a balanced facade that enhances visual interest whilst maintaining durability and practicality.
The recladding works were delivered alongside a series of wider upgrades, including new pitched roofs, replacement windows and doors, improved balconies, modernised staircases and enhanced communal areas.
Completion
The completed scheme has transformed Thorn Close both functionally and aesthetically. Residents now benefit from warmer, more comfortable homes, improved shared spaces and a renewed external environment featuring new landscaping, garden roofs, cycle and bin stores and upgraded parking provision.
In addition to the physical improvements, the project delivered meaningful social value. SWG Construction supported local employment through work placements and training opportunities, providing hands-on experience for young people and local residents.
The Thorn Close refurbishment demonstrates how considered recladding solutions, combined with wider building upgrades, can play a key role in extending the life of existing housing stock, improving resident wellbeing and contributing positively to the surrounding neighbourhood.
