North Quay House
Overview
North Quay House is an office building in central Bristol, which has recently been refurbished and remodelled to improve energy efficiency, appearance and access. Originally providing 25,000sq ft of office space over five-storeys, the extensive refurbishment has added an extra four-storeys and has brought the building in line with British Council for Offices (BCO) standards.
This project, designed by architects Stride Treglown, placed a strong emphasis on user wellbeing and sustainability. Corium brick cladding, manufactured by Wienerberger and installed by A20 Ltd, was utilised to clad the exterior of the building, giving the facade a fresh and modern finish.
Concept to completion
North Quay House is part of a wider redevelopment of three Legal & General owned office buildings on Bristol’s floating harbour, collectively called the Neighbourhood. This two-phased refurbishment of the outdated buildings aims to provide Bristol businesses with sustainable and amenity rich office space.
Architects Stride Treglown wanted to retain the existing structure of North Quay House, to contribute towards the project’s Net Zero goals. Therefore, it was decided that Corium brick cladding would be utilised to reclad the facade, giving the building a new and improved appearance. Corium was able to offer many benefits to the project, being both A1 fire rated and BBA approved (19/5693), alongside providing key sustainability benefits.
The Corium tiles, due to being slips as opposed to full bricks, use on average 75% less raw material during manufacture than standard bricks. The system can also be installed up to four times faster than traditional brickwork, which meant that construction time on-site was greatly reduced. With all aspects of the build focusing on sustainable practices and materials, upon completion the project was awarded BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, an EPC A rating and certified as Net Zero Carbon.
Completed in 2024, North Quay House now offers upgraded facilities, including bike storage, showers and changing rooms, as well as wellness amenities, which are accessible to all building users. As well as its fantastic sustainability accreditations, the building has also been awarded winner of the Regeneration Project of the Year at the Michelmores Property Awards 2024, alongside being shortlisted for a number of other regeneration and refurbishment awards. Phase two of the development will bring the other two buildings in line with North Quay House, with subtle variations to create variety and interest.
