# Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby

 **Overview**

The Diana Princess of Wales Hospital Emergency Department redevelopment forms a key part of a wider investment programme to enhance urgent and emergency care services across North Lincolnshire. Located on Scartho Road in Grimsby, the new facility has been designed to improve patient experience, increase capacity and support the delivery of modern healthcare services for the local community.

Designed by [P+HS Architects](https://www.pandhs.co.uk/projects/emergency-department-grimsby) and delivered by [Kier Construction](https://www.kier.co.uk/), the £17.9 million development provides a purpose-built emergency care environment that more than doubles key patient waiting and assessment areas while creating a flexible facility capable of meeting future healthcare demands.

SBS Cladding supplied the red [Anvil Metal Cladding](https://www.sbscladding.com/metal-cladding/anvil), that compliment the [New Ivanhoe Cream facing bricks](https://www.taylormaxwell.co.uk/bricks/facing-bricks) provided by [Taylor Maxwell](https://www.taylormaxwell.co.uk/), helping to create a striking and welcoming external façade that reflects the quality and importance of the new healthcare facility.

  **Concept to Completion**

Developed in close collaboration with healthcare professionals and clinical teams, the new emergency department was designed to improve patient flow, increase treatment capacity and create a more efficient environment for both staff and visitors. The scheme forms the first phase of a broader programme of emergency care improvements across the Trust's hospital estate.

A defining feature of the project is its striking external façade. We supplied Anvil Metal Cladding RJF1 in RAL 3016, creating a bold architectural statement that clearly distinguishes the Emergency Department from the surrounding hospital estate. The rich red finish provides an immediate visual identity, while the clean vertical lines of the cladding system contribute to the building's appearance.

The façade design combines extensive glazing with the Anvil rainscreen system to create a welcoming entrance sequence. A dramatic angled transition between glass and metal cladding draws visitors towards the department entrance, helping with navigation while maximising natural daylight throughout the building. The result is a modern healthcare facility that feels open, accessible and reassuring for patients and visitors alike.

Complementing the cladding, New Ivanhoe Cream facing bricks were supplied by partner Taylor Maxwell, helping to create a balanced material palette that combines visual impact with long-term durability. The materials were selected to meet the demanding performance requirements of a busy healthcare environment while delivering a high-quality architectural finish.

Manufactured from aluminium and available with A1 and A2 fire-rated options, the Anvil metal cladding system offers excellent durability, low maintenance requirements and design flexibility, making it particularly suited to large-scale public sector projects. Its recessed joint profile creates crisp shadow lines across the façade, enhancing the building's visual depth and reinforcing the contemporary character envisioned by the design team.

Working alongside Kier Construction and specialist installer Chemplas Ltd, SBS supported the successful delivery of the external envelope, ensuring the façade materials met both programme requirements and the project's architectural aspirations.

Today, the completed Emergency Department provides a highly visible new gateway to the hospital, combining modern healthcare design with a durable, high-performance façade that will serve the local community for many years to come.
