# Why Does Rainscreen Cladding Matter?

A successful façade is about much more than appearance. While the external cladding provides the visible finish of a building, the system behind it plays an equally important role in protecting the building fabric and supporting long-term performance.

Rainscreen cladding is designed to manage some of the key challenges faced by external façades, including moisture, ventilation, thermal performance and, when correctly designed and specified, fire safety.

But what makes the rainscreen system so important, and what should architects and specifiers consider when selecting one?

  **Managing Moisture**

One of the primary functions of a rainscreen system is to protect the building from the effects of wind-driven rain.

Rather than relying on the outer cladding layer alone to create a completely watertight barrier, a rainscreen façade uses a cavity between the external cladding and the wall construction behind it. Any moisture that makes its way through joints or openings in the outer layer can then be drained away, while ventilation helps the cavity to dry.

This separation between the external skin and the building structure is a fundamental part of how rainscreen systems manage moisture. Industry guidance highlights the importance of providing suitable drainage and ventilation to allow water and moisture vapour to escape from the cavity.

For the building owner, this can help protect insulation and the underlying structure from moisture-related problems. For the designer, it means the façade can be designed as a complete system rather than relying on the cladding panel alone to provide weather protection.

  **Ventilation Behind the Façade**

The cavity does more than provide a route for water to drain. A properly designed and ventilated cavity allows air to circulate behind the cladding, helping residual moisture to escape. This is particularly important because some moisture penetration should be anticipated in a rainscreen system rather than assuming the external skin will prevent all water from entering the cavity.

Ventilation openings therefore need to be considered as part of the overall façade design. They must allow sufficient airflow and drainage while also being appropriately detailed around openings, cavity barriers and other façade components.

The result is a façade build-up that can better manage the changing conditions experienced throughout the year, helping to maintain the performance and durability of the materials within it.

  **Supporting Thermal Performance**

Rainscreen cladding is also closely connected to the thermal performance of the external wall. The cavity and cladding form part of a wider façade build-up that can incorporate dedicated rainscreen insulation. SBS Cladding supplies a range of insulation products specifically designed for use with ventilated cladding systems, including [Knauf Rocksilk Rainscreen Slab](https://www.sbscladding.com/rainscreen-insulation/knauf-rocksilk-rainscreen), [Kingspan K-roc Rainscreen Slab](https://www.sbscladding.com/rainscreen-insulation/kingspan-k-roc-rainscreen) and [Rockwool Rainscreen Duo Slab](https://www.sbscladding.com/rainscreen-insulation/rockwool-rainscreen-duo).

Selecting the appropriate insulation alongside the cladding and support system is therefore an important part of achieving the required thermal performance of the building envelope. This highlights why rainscreen specification should consider the complete build-up, rather than treating the visible cladding as an isolated product.

  **Fire Safety and System Design**

Fire safety is another important consideration when designing a rainscreen façade.

The performance of an external wall depends on the interaction between its individual components, including the cladding, insulation, support system, membranes and cavity barriers. The cavity itself needs to be carefully designed so that it does not provide an uncontrolled route for fire and smoke to spread.

UK guidance and industry standards place specific requirements on cavity barriers, fire stopping and the fire performance of materials depending on the building and façade design. This makes product selection only one part of the process. The way products are combined, detailed and installed is equally important.

SBS Cladding's product portfolio reflects this wider approach to façade design, bringing together decorative cladding systems with framing systems, insulation and fire protection products.

For example, SBS Cladding supplies A1-rated [NVELOPE® aluminium rainscreen framing](https://www.sbscladding.com/framing-systems-fixings/nvelope) systems, as well as A1-rated rainscreen insulation products and a range of fire barrier and fire protection solutions.

  **Design Freedom Without Compromising Performance**

Rainscreen systems also give architects considerable flexibility when it comes to the appearance of a building.

SBS Cladding supplies a broad range of rainscreen solutions, including [fibre cement](https://www.sbscladding.com/fibre-cement-cladding), [metal](https://www.sbscladding.com/metal-cladding), [mineral fibre](https://www.sbscladding.com/mineral-fibre-cladding), [terracotta](https://www.sbscladding.com/terracotta-cladding), [slate](https://www.sbscladding.com/slate-cladding) and [brick](https://www.sbscladding.com/brick-cladding) cladding systems.

This means different materials, colours, textures and formats can be incorporated into façade designs while still forming part of a considered rainscreen approach.

Metal systems such as [Anvil](https://www.sbscladding.com/metal-cladding/anvil), for example, are available in aluminium, zinc, copper, stainless steel and Corten steel, with a wide choice of finishes and colours. The [Genius](https://www.sbscladding.com/metal-cladding/genius) range provides further options, including large-format panels, concealed fixings and bespoke finishes.

The choice of finish may be driven by the architectural vision, but the system supporting it needs to be considered at the same time.

  **Why the Complete System Matters**

A rainscreen façade is made up of multiple components that need to work together.

The external cladding, [framing system](https://www.sbscladding.com/framing-systems-fixings), [insulation](https://www.sbscladding.com/rainscreen-insulation), [membranes](https://www.sbscladding.com/fire-rated-membranes), [fixings](https://www.sbscladding.com/framing-systems-fixings/sfs-tuf-s-fixings), cavity barriers and other elements all contribute to the overall performance of the façade. Selecting one component without considering how it interacts with the rest of the build-up can create problems further down the line.

This is why specification should start with the requirements of the building and work towards an appropriate system, rather than simply selecting a cladding material based on appearance.

At SBS Cladding, this system-led approach is supported by a broad product portfolio alongside project take offs, scheduling, product optimisation and [fabrication services](https://www.sbscladding.com/services/cladding-fabrication-and-packaging). Its fabrication facilities include laser-guided beam saws and CNC routing equipment, allowing panels to be cut, shaped, drilled and bevelled to project requirements.

  **Getting the Specification Right**

Rainscreen cladding can offer an effective way to combine architectural flexibility with the practical requirements of a building envelope, but its success depends on more than the outer panel. Moisture management, ventilation, thermal performance, fire safety, fixing systems and installation all need to be considered as part of the overall façade design.

By taking a system-based approach from the outset, architects, contractors and specifiers can make more informed decisions about the materials and components that work together to deliver the required performance.

At SBS Cladding, our team can support projects from product selection and specification through to fabrication and delivery. With a wide range of rainscreen cladding, framing, insulation and fire protection products available, we can help you find a solution suited to your project requirements.
